Sara Alleyn (British)

Sara Alleyn lives and works in Oxford. She studied History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London (1976-79) and later, in the 1990′s (part-time) Fine Art at Central St Martins. She has had regular exhibitions in Oxford and London, and was artist in residence at the Oxford Literary Festival in 2005.

Her paintings do not easily fit into definable categories as her interests cover a wide range of subjects: figurative drawing, dance and movement, portraits, landscape and, latterly, a concern with simplified and expressive abstract form. She works in a variety of media from pencil, charcoal and chalk to gouache, ink, watercolour, enamel and oil.

Her recent work is an attempt to express the intense, subjective experience of being in  raw landscape – the sea, the wind, rain,  light, the movement of cloud – and capturing its essence through the prism of memory and feeling. She is drawn again and again to the rugged north coast of west Cornwall and to the wild, unspoilt shores of Connemara in the West of Ireland.
