Giuliana Lazzerini (Italian, 1951)

Giuliana Lazzerini was born in Tuscany, Italy. She gained a Master of Arts from the Istituto D'Arte Stagio Stagi in Pietrasanta, and graduated in painting from Accademia di Belle Arti in Carrara. Giuliana became inspired by art during her childhood, when much of her time was spent in her father's studio in Italy. She now lives in Britain, but describes her memories of her childhood in Tuscany as her main influence; her father ran a mosaic studio, and the influence of the 'translucency of the mosaic fragment' is felt throughout her work. She achieves similar striking juxtapositions of colour in her prints.

Lazzerini makes her linocuts in small editions that are varied, each individual print in the edition containing different colours, and many being finished with unique hand-painted details, especially birds. She favours hand-made paper, for the qualities of texture it adds to each work. In terms of their subjects, she describes her prints as usually leaving some element only partially defined, so as to leave 'the viewer's imagination to interact with the work'. Often she plays with ambiguities of space.

She has had numerous solo exhibitions in Italy, Switzerland, Michigan, USA, London, Glasgow, Leeds, Bradford, Doncaster, Durham and York. She has regularly exhibited at the R.I and R.O.I. at the Mall Galleries, London. Her work has been three times finalist in Singer and Friedlander and shown at Discerning Eye exhibitions. She has also won awards in Rome, Florence, Forte Dei Mari, Milan and the R.I., Mall Galleries, London.

The full range of Lazzerini's works is available exclusively in gallery.
